I guess, I'm not the kind of person to vent my shit online... It's now clear that only a total psycho would do that. My thoughts are mine alone and I will only share them with those who have the capability to break into my computer!
SO STRANGE
Posted by anna on Sunday, September 11 2005
For some reason I gave one of my good friends the link to my site, I think she had asked me what I was doing over the weekend. So she saw the page entitled - Where Time Stands Still. It's no surprise to anyone that it's middlesex state sanitarium which was more than just a sanitarium. It turns out that Wellington Cottage was her old dorm when she was a student at Bentley. I got some pretty cool stories out of her about Trapelo Road and the freaks that lived there - well one freak in particular that lived inthe dorm and took it upon herself to hoard more toilet paper than anyone righfully should.
Anyway I am going to fix the page to reflect her descriptions of the various builings. I guess my pages are the reslt of when the mind runs wild. But that's not to say that some of my ideas couldn't have been somewhat true at one point since these dorms were once used for the patients.
RUN TO THE HILLS
Posted by anna on Saturday, September 10 2005
It's been such a chaotic and disturbing month. Things are starting to chill and I now have time for more exploration. I haven't check out out many places the past month or if I did go somewhere I didn't get to spend enough quality time investigating.
The weather is PERFECT today and it wasn't until I got to the School for Children that I realized I started exploring exactly one year ago and was a t the SAME site. Subconsciously, I think I wanted to see if I had the same feelings and it turns out, it wierded me out even more.
Last year we didn't get in, but this year we were fortunate enough to get in. When I am there, I get an overwhelming sense of children, both happy and sad. It's a strange kind of energy, I know I always say that. But as your walking up to the top of the hill, it's so quiet and the winding road is lined with trees on both sides. This must ave been a beautiful place when open - at the very least on the outside! There are some jungle gyms, swing sets, and a pool that has long since been filled in. Two old mattresses lie in the field, probably left over from a camp out.
Upon entry, I realize that I am probably one of the most ignorant people on the face of the earth. I completely forgot to get new batteries for the flashlights. However, I am determined to get some decent pics and so we traveled on through the black hallways. I must admit, the longer I stayed the there more tunnelled my field of vision got - which can freak a girl out.
We found the roof - and by the way I am not taking any credit as I couldn't have found my own hand if it were in front of my face.
The pics should be up soon...
DESTINATION UNKNOWN

You never know where you will end up when exploring this road in a Mass town that shall remain nameless. This is one of the only roads I know of that has four abandoned hospitals; Skinner's Box, Where Time Stands Still, and two others.
As always Sinner's Box always makes for an interesting time, esp since the demolition began. I believe the morgue, utility builsing, maintenance shop, and Furcolo building are gone at this time. Objects of interest - clock tower, one sad pigeon, nurses quarters, records room that was the victim of fire and flood, and tons of medical euipment. Isn't that what one would expect to find in a medical building??
Next point of interest - Where Time Stands Still - former sanitarium and chronic care facility up the road. Saddest moment for all was when we realized the clock tower that had been there since 1938 and in plain view of the road was gone. The tunnels were all that was left as well as large piles of junk. Lots of medical supplies were found - epinepherine, hypodermics, x-ray machines, paperwork, an anatomy theater, and not much else.
TICKS & MOSQUITOS

Although this particular sanatorium was not the most beautiful, the biggest, or the most intriguing - as the rest of them are - it had an enchanting character that made the intense mission totally worth it.
This was a typical case of, "more of the same." There were probably 15 or so repetitive buildings. Some in worse shape than others.
Unique features included the tiniest doors in the maintenance / power plant. It makes me wonder if they employed a large volume of little people here. I should mention that this is the first matenance shop with pctures of naked chicks - circa late '80's. There was a large greenhouse with all of the glass smashed out that was concoquered by 18 years of overgrown trees, weeds, and plants. There were what looked to be some large storage barns with a lot of furniture -lights, bureaus, and televisions.
We also saw a deer who seemed pretty happy to see us - she was wagging her tail.
THE YELLOW WALLPAPER
Posted by anna on Sunday, July 10 2005
Well there was no wallpaper, but this place reminded me of the story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Walking through this decomposing asylum all I could think of was an unstable, middle-aged woman climbing the wall to tear off the paper and put an end to the faces in the wall that were mocking her. Like I said – no wall paper, but there were some very interesting faces spray painted in a blue tiled room in the tunnels. I am as ballsy as the next chick, but I was not stepping foot inside that room alone to snap a pic. But I got a slightly disturbing pic from the doorway.
The Kirkbride was explored from tunnel to attic – where we got some great aerials. These floors were SCARY; you could see them dip down when you walked on them in many spots. In some rooms it was raining and in others looked like small ponds, there were also rooms with mold and grass. Many of the tunnels were flooded out as was the cafeteria. Parts of Noho even resembled metstate. It always comes back to the metro!
There were a lot of interesting finds here. There was a beautiful auditorium and at least two pianos that I could find, a morgue in the basement with lots of cool equipment, an enclosed courtyard, old school I.V. hook up, X-ray machine, a solitary confinement cage in the tunnel,
Across the street in another dormitory, one that also housed children, there was a door leading to an enclosed porch with a cat door in it. It was so cute.
The color schemes in this hospital were pretty cool – like a pastel dream. No seriously, it was pretty; there were quite a few fireplaces throughout the admin building…..
It's worth mentioning that within the first 15 minutes my flashlight died and my camera started fucking up - both the digital and the 35 mm. I know the skeptics are mocking me, but it's also worth mentioning that I was not the only one that this was happenng to.
The Hollow Hospital had a pretty fucked up layout. It looked like a combination of a mini kirkbride, cottage style, and modern architecture on one campus. It was wierd. Like someone dropped these buildings down in different periods of time.
Some were from the 1800's, 1900's, and 1940's, it definitely represents all the different styles. This hospital was also pretty much self contained, the patients did all their own farming, maintenance, etc... The buildings were all grouped together to leave room for all of the farm land around the perimeter.
Cool place if you have a few minutes to spare. Watch out for the coyotes. Also the police spend some time on the grounds in the area near the cottages.
This place was totally empty on the inside from what we could see (and have heard). I guess further investigation is warranted.
BUNKER BY THE SEA - PART II
Posted by anna on Sunday, July 3 2005
Someone showed us the way in and I truly felt like Alice in Wonderland. The only way in was to slide into a hole in the earth. I was covered in filth from head to toe and broke a couple of nails.
Not too much inside, with the exception that every inch of the walls were completely tagged. Some beutiful - others not so nice.
It felt like being inside of a video game. Complete darkness, water dripping, and open manhole covers every few feet that let to flooded rooms. There were some cool doors, bars, and the whole set up was brick, ie another brick in the wall style.
If you walk further up the cliff, there is a door in the side of it. I didn't make it quite that far, but I'm sure laurie and rob would tell you that it's a great view.

HOWARD'S HOME
Posted by anna on Monday, June 27 2005
This weekend we drove forever to get to a school for the feeble minded. It closed down in 2000, so it was pretty much in tact. At first you can sense the overwhelming feeling of loss, but then after a while, it passes.
There were tons of patient files, medical equipment, underwear, and other miscellaneous belongings that must have meant a lot to someone locked in here away from everyone that they love. Most of the "guests" were dropped off here as children who weren't wanted anymore sometimes cuz they were slow - at that time mental deficiencies were classified in three levels - idiots, morons, and imbiciles - sound familiar??
The cafeteria was huge and there were rooms full of recipies and patient nutritional charts. Lots of wierd bath tub things.
"From the torrent, or the fountain, From the red cliff of the mountain, From the sun that 'round me roll'd In its autumn tint of gold From the lightening in the sky As it passed me flying by-- From the thunder and the storm, And the cloud that took the form (when the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view." ~~EAP

NO LOCKED DOORS

We finally found some interesting stuff in the main patient buildings. This enormous building housed about 1,250 patients legally, and who knows how many were really living there. Since we started out so late, we didn’t go too far into the unit.
Out of all of the buildings this is the worst one that I have seen. It is completely trashed from severe water damage, fire, paintballs, random patient and staff possessions, and words of wisdom spray painted on the wall by a bunch of drunk people with third grade educations. I felt like walking around with my red spray-paints correcting all of the errors.
I was so psyched to find patient files, not complete files they were basically occupational therapy notes. I read stuff about people suffering form severe mania after cutting of their hand to a patient diagnosed as “bona fide maniac.” I was pretty surprised at some of the terminology they used; we wanted to check out the rest of the building so we really didn’t get to read too much. Plus it was a weird little room and it made me uncomfortable to be in there, we could see our breath in there and my camera stopped working. Also in the same room was a pile of clothing comprised of nurses uniforms (these dresses were SO short), some patient nightgowns, and needlepoint work. There was also a cute little painting of the entire facility. I also found some really old occupational therapy books lying around. I would love to read these, but I am not taking anything home from here.
The cafeteria is huge and has a balcony on one side as well as pillars. Three gigantic chandeliers are in the middle of the room, not sure if they fell or were cut. Someone left their underwear behind on one of them.
The enclosed courtyard was one of the coolest things I have seen. There was a basketball court on one side and a ton of trees, weeds, and poison ivy. I could totally see myself layout in the sun here, it’s really peaceful except for all the animals running around.
We also made it into the Superintendent’s House. This place was bigger than it appears on the outside and I still want to move in. There are like three fireplaces and six bathrooms. The rooms are painted pastel colors like peach, pale blue, and mauve. The wired thing was, in all of the bathrooms, even in the shower, there were hospital soap dispensers. In the cellar, the walls were painted with an ocean scene – the ocean and some sea life on one wall and a tugboat on another. On the wall with the tugboat there was a vault built into the wall.
It turns out that Sanitariums are not as exciting as the actual hospitals for the insane. These were completely gutted and there were no personal belongings.
We checked out some "cottages" - a male and female cottage. We found some dinosaur stickers, forks, shower curtains, and a comforter. The female cottage did have a beautiful marble bathroom.
Also on the grounds were staff housing, which had some cool finds. One of the staff members left behind a ton of shit. More food than is in my kitchen, lots of shampoo and soap and nair (which I didn't even know people used anymore), a purple bath poof, and a picture on the wall - which was not in a frame, something that I was extremely bothered by. This chick was defiitely not into cleanliness. Her house was a mess. I have never seen so much garbage in a garage before. Literal garbage, food, catlitter - both used and unused, and pieces of stray furniture. And the smell... Did I mention she had a cat?
I think that the best find of the day were the loveletter, card, and additional personal belongings like a college certificate and pictures from Europe. I stupidly forgot to take pics of these items.
The other home had some nasty food in the fridge - guess how I figured that out? I will never open another fridge until we are on the way out of the building. This house was more damaged, the floors were bucked and caving through.
This guy must have been interesting. He used some great shampoo and body wash! He left behind a black Gap sweater, two pairs of speedos, and a couple of those boxer kind of brief things. I have never seen such small speedos, actually I have never seen speedos before. I do not want to see them again.
The one thing that is burnt in my memory is the smell. Some of the buildings were so bad, I was not about to go inside. The smell (and the breeze hits you about 4 or 5 feet away. It's fucking crazy the gust of cold wind that you feel when walking by. It was about 80 outside so it was pretty noticeable. More nasty smells that I would like to share - the smell of nursing home piss in the female cottage.
Recently, we visited Met State to check out the sitch. Huge piles of trash outside the buildings they are working on. Lots of good stuff in those piles if you feel like digging...
There are filing cabinets that would not open for the average females. I think tools may be needed! Anyway, lots of furniture, paperwork, wheelchairs, and floor layouts, etc. The morgue which was once so much fun is now an empty shell. All of the cool supplies are out of it. There are still patient records of the autopsy samples basically saying what they were and what the condition was. These patients were old, with names like Chas, George George, and an inordinate amount of Mary's. They died between 1940's and 1960's.
MY WICKED ADVENTURES FORUM

I was so sad when the Danvers State Asylum Web Forum was shut down, so I started my own. Keep in mind that I have NEVER done this before so I have no clue as to how this goddamn thing works. Any help would be much appreciated!
